I really like both, but did you consider keeping the piano as the lead instrument and building some orchestration around it? I would have been very interested to have heard the result of that!

I was a musician from a very early age. It was all I wanted to do until my late teens when the usual pressures of money/work/future prospects led me eventually too a career in Information Technology. I always maintained an interest in music, especially folk, American serialism and minimalism(!) together with electronic music more generally and home recording. Back then it was all tapes and four tracks and scissors! But now that I'm mostly retired, I'm doing exactly what you have described. I'm going back to what I love and have been playing and recording music as before but now with much better technology! I do feel like I missed out on not pursuing music more than I did, but on the other hand there are always choices, choices, choices. Keep up the good work. You've inspired me and doubtless many others to be more musical - more creative - in our lives. Your talent and your grace do shine.

I guess I can understand it being “close” since the notes are close to each other but then why is the other one “open.” It feels it should either be “close” and “far” or “closed” and “open.” Either way, lovely video! I always feel like I learn a little something from each of your videos.

This has been my entire arc of growth as a musician. I'm completely self-taught. I'll get an idea in my brain, not be able to execute it, and keep grinding till I can, which levels up my chops (whether physical or conceptual). Then I get the next idea, and round and round we go. It took a long time for me to stop beating myself up for not being able to do what I can't do... yet.

What about ostinatos that doesnt just arpegiate chord tones, but use small melodic fragments on the whole scale ?

Me too, its an amazing sound but the top sounds un realistic it jumps too fast to the very hard sounds

What's cool about this song is that it sounds like Rachmaninoff - Prelude in C Sharp Minor Op. 3 No. 2 in the beginning and the story about that song supposedly is that he had a dream of being buried alive. The show Severance is about these work personalities being suppressed ... In a way it's like being buried. I think the Severance opening song is genius.

Adam Neely has a video about the key change in Celine Dion's version of "All by Myself." It's truly elegant stuff. I can't remember who did the arrangement for the song. Other songwriters I think have genius key changes are Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, and Burt Bacharach. Paul McCartney had a couple of pretty great ones in "Penny Lane."
